Sensation | Perception

The first symbol stands for the sensation: a repetitive disturbance of the nervous system.

The second symbol stands for a number of sensations which together makes up perception.

Our sensations behave as soft and elastic things behave because this is in fact what they are. Parts of our organism are disturbed and move differently than the rest of our whole body. If elastic they go on bouncing back. This can happen more repetitively or less repetitively. Gradually the nervous system, the main carrier and receiver of all these disturbances learns to recognize one repeated disturbance from another. Most probably this is because there is one disturbance (or set of disturbances) more repetitive than all the rest, more continuously present except in deep sleep, whereas the other disturbances come and go.

What we call “I” or “we” or “me” is shown on the main framework to be connected to this permanent disturbance going on in the nervous system. And it senses the other partial, less permament ones which come and go. It then uses the differences between all these other disturbances to get some meaning about what is going on.

Ears react to a certain range of disturbance of the air. Eyes to a certain range of the disturbances of the ether, which we call light, and touch to whatever is contacted directly by the body. Touch is direct sensation whereas hearing and seeing is by way of air and ether. They are indirect.

The nervous system senses disturbances coming both from the inside and from the outside. It is through sensations that we are directly in contact and connected to the rest of the universe.

Perception is a number of sensations happening together at the same present moment of time. Any perception of disturbances of the nervous system, whether sensation or feeling or emotion, occurs in the present (N).
